A Little Bit About
David Hughes Jones
Born in Port Talbot and educated at Cheltenham College and St David’s Trinity (Carmarthen School of Art), I was managing director/chairman of D.W.Jones (Printers) Ltd in Port Talbot until I took an early retirement. I currently reside in Swansea, operating across the UK.
My Mother encouraged me to paint from an early age, embroidering a pillow case defaced with a penguin, inked while ill in bed at aged 4 with my dad’s fountain pen!
I found early retirement difficult, and undertook a Fine Art degree in Painting and Printmaking, partly to see if my mum had been right about my painting. Now, my paintings are studies of light, space and colour through the subject of seascape and landscape, particularly the small zone where land meets sea. This zone is the place where we can experience microscopic changes in the environment which may ultimately lead to disaster on a macroscopic level, and is a testament to the fragile ecological environment which we inhabit.
Images of the coast and sea reflect my experiences of a lifetime of boating, biking and walking, particularly in the south west corner of the UK.
These paintings are usually constructed with many semi-transparent glazes and might include shells or sand from the beach, or small pieces of detritus left by the tide or flow. It isn’t my intention to be realistic, but to create the atmosphere of the subject in view – please take a closer look at my gallery, prints and originals.
